Nuclear waste management

By increasing transparency, strengthening accountability and aligning financial provisions with long-term commitments, Intysify supported safer, more compliant and sustainable nuclear waste strategies.

Context

Nuclear waste management is a critical challenge for both environmental sustainability and public safety. If not properly managed, nuclear waste can cause long-term contamination of air, water and soil, posing serious health and environmental risks. As countries move towards low-carbon energy sources, nuclear power remains an important part of the energy mix. However, its sustainability depends on the safe, transparent and efficient management of radioactive waste.

As sustainability is at the heart of our consultancy approach, the responsible management of nuclear waste aligns with our expertise in governance, compliance and sustainable risk management. By ensuring that nuclear operators comply with stricter regulations and adopt best practices, we contribute to a safer and more responsible energy transition - a key pillar of sustainable development.

In Belgium, nuclear operators are required by law to submit a comprehensive report on their nuclear facilities every five years. These reports must not only ensure regulatory compliance, but also serve as strategic tools to anticipate risks, optimize financial provisions and guide political decision-making.

Our impact.

Our mission was to strengthen the reporting process by ensuring that it accurately reflects the financial, operational and environmental realities of nuclear waste management. Key objectives included ensuring financial transparency by aligning costs and provisions but also improving regulatory compliance through accurate and structured reporting. Improving accountability by assigning clear responsibilities for each category of nuclear waste and providing decision-makers with actionable insights for long-term sustainability were also part of our mission.

To fully understand the scope of the nuclear waste challenge, we worked with waste producers and industry stakeholders. This allowed us to assess their financial liquidity and ensure that they had the necessary resources to meet their waste management obligations. We then conducted a detailed gap analysis between the estimated costs of nuclear waste management and the actual financial provisions in place. By reconciling these differences, we helped to establish a more accurate and sustainable financial strategy report for the long-term storage of nuclear waste.

Additionally, one of the key issues in nuclear waste management is to ensure that each type of waste has a designated party responsible. We have strengthened this process, clarified roles and ensured that no waste is left unaccounted for - a crucial step in maintaining regulatory and environmental integrity.

Thanks to Intysify's expertise in regulatory compliance and sustainable risk management, this project resulted in a more transparent and structured reporting process and improved financial accuracy, ensuring that operators are prepared for long-term waste management costs. It also enabled stronger accountability mechanisms, minimizing the risk of mismanagement or environmental hazards.
