Transforming procurement into a lever for positive impact: BSCA’s journey toward sustainability begins with clear, actionable insights

March 12, 2025

Context

Integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into procurement processes is becoming a priority for organizations committed to making a positive impact. Against this backdrop, Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) sought support in initiating a responsible purchasing approach in line with the best green procurement practices. In March 2025, a consultant from Intysify undertook a two-week mission to support this effort.

The main objective was to assess current procurement practices, identify areas for improvement and provide concrete recommendations for integrating ESG principles into the procurement function.

Our impact.

The mission was structured around several key steps. First, a diagnosis of current practices: the consultant began by analyzing the role of responsible procurement within the organization, including supplier selection processes, integration of sustainability criteria and whether any ESG risk analysis was conducted. A series of interviews were conducted with internal stakeholders (buyers, technical managers, senior management) to better understand current practices, challenges and aspirations.

Our consultant conducted a review of internal documentation: a thorough analysis of internal documents helped to reconcile the observations from the interviews with the company's formal procurement policies. The analysis was structured according to the key pillars of ISO 20400, the international standard for sustainable procurement. Each criterion was assessed qualitatively.

Finally, the findings were consolidated into a SWOT matrix, highlighting the organization's strengths (e.g. willingness to act, internal commitment), weaknesses (the lack of ESG risk analysis for suppliers or internal operations), as well as opportunities and potential risks.
